What is TMJ Massage and who can benefit from it?

Do you ever feel tense in your jaw area or feel clicking when opening or closing your mouth?

The muscles surrounding your jaw and face are working overtime on most people; between talking, chewing, clenching and even teeth grinding in their sleep.

Tension in these muscles can make many actions uncomfortable or even painful such as opening and closing your mouth or chewing. Jaw tensions can even cause headaches, since the muscles connected to the jaw attach near the temples and can create pressure in this area.

Our TMJ Massage was designed to help target these issues specifically. During this session, we begin by releasing the muscles in the upper back and neck, which can play a part in jaw and head tension. Then, we approach the facial muscles. Your therapist may utilize small facial cups or a massage stone over the cheek, jaw and mouth area to help bring movement to stiff muscles and release knots. Yes, that’s correct, you can have knots in the muscles of your face!

We then use a gloved hand to work the jaw muscles that are best accessed inside of the mouth. Since these muscles typically hold a high amount of tension, we take time to carefully apply pressure to help release the muscles.

Like with massaging any muscle for the first time, it may take a few sessions to notice a significant relief. But we have had clients share that they have had profound relief from chronic jaw pain, tension or clicking after receiving TMJ massages with us. Massage therapy is transformational, and we are honored to help guide our clients to wellbeing through our work.
